Take the first step in your dive career
and become a PADI Divemaster. Working closely with a PADI Instructor,
you'll expand your dive knowledge and hone your skills as you become a
dive professional. PADI Divemaster training develops your leadership
abilities by training you to supervise dive activities and assist
instructors with student divers.
What can PADI Divemasters do?
- Work at local dive centers, on live-aboard
dive boats, yachts and at exotic resort locations
- Assist PADI Instructors with students
- Lead PADI Scuba Divers on guided dive tours
- Teach and certify PADI Skin Divers
- Teach PADI Discover Snorkeling programs
- Conduct PADI Scuba Review programs for
certified divers
- Lead certified divers on Discover Local
Diving experiences
- Teach Emergency First Response programs after
successful completion of an Emergency First Response Instructor course.

Prerequisites
- PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or qualifying
certification from another training organization
- PADI Rescue Diver certification or qualifying
certification from another training organization.
- Medical clearance signed by a physician
- 20 logged dives
- 18 years old

Assistant
Instructor
The PADI Assistant Instructor course is the first portion of the
PADI Instructor Development
Course (IDC). You'll not only gain additional experience as a PADI
Professional but you'll also start learning the PADI System of diver
education.
What can PADI Assistant Instructors do?
- Teach academic presentations under the indirect supervision of a
PADI Instructor
- Evaluate Open Water Diver surface skills under the indirect
supervision of a PADI Instructor
- Teach the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty course
- Teach Project AWARE Specialty courses
- Conduct PADI Discover Scuba experiences
- Teach Emergency First Response after successful completion of an

Course Prerequisites
- PADI Divemaster rating or qualifying certification from another
certification organization
- At least 18 years old
- Have 60 logged dives, including night, deep, and navigation
dives
- Have been a certified diver for at least 6 months

presentations
Confined water skill review and assessment, workshops and
presentations
Open water workshops, rescue assessment and candidate presentations
How long will it take?
The course can vary from as little as three days to more than two

Water Scuba Instructor & IDC
The PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor program is your final step in the quest
to become a PADI Instructor. During the IDC, you'll learn to use and adapt the
PADI System of diver education to individual student needs. Comprehensive
training, supported by a wide variety of PADI educational materials, earns PADI
Instructors respect from both students and peers. PADI Open Water Scuba
Instructors may conduct a broad range of PADI programs from Discover Scuba to
Divemaster.
The PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor rating sets you apart from the crowd. PADI
Instructors may conduct the entire range of PADI programs - from Discover Scuba
through Divemaster. PADI Instructors do things others can only daydream about.

Course Prerequisites
- PADI Assistant Instructor certification or be an instructor in good
standing with another training organization for at least six months ( check
with a PADI Course Director or PADI Office for qualifying credentials.)
- Hold a dive certification for at least six months
- Have 60 logged dives that include night, deep and navigation dives
- Proof of CPR training within the last 24 months
- Medical clearance signed by a physician
What will I do?
- Knowledge development through self-study, quizzes, lectures and
presentations
- Confined water skill review and assessment, workshops and presentations
- Open water workshops, rescue assessment and candidate presentations
- Have at least 100 logged dives prior to entering a PADI Instructor Exam
How long will it take?
Times can vary from four days to three weeks or more

The instructor development process is a combination of programs designed to
enhance instructor candidate’s abilities as dive professionals, as well as offer
specialized training programs, all of which are intended to increase their
success. This process begins with the PADI Assistant Instructor course and
ranges through Specialty Instructor training, IDC Staff Instructor courses and
business education programs.
The foundation of PADI instructor development is the PADI Instructor
Development Course (IDC). The program consists of two parts — the Assistant
Instructor (AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program.
Combining the three-day AI course and the four-day OWSI program into a
continuous program makes up a seven day IDC.
Successfully completing an AI course allows instructor candidates to earn the
PADI Assistant Instructor rating which authorizes them to function as
instructional assistants and independently conduct certain PADI programs. AI
course completion also qualifies candidates to participate in an OWSI program.
Successfully completing the OWSI program (or an entire IDC) makes candidates
eligible to participate in a PADI Instructor Examination (IE). The IE is a
completely evaluative program that tests the instructor candidate’s teaching
ability, dive knowledge, skill level, understanding of the PADI System, attitude
and professionalism. Instructor candidates become PADI Open Water Scuba
Instructors only after successfully completing an IE. PADI IEs are standardized,
objective evaluations conducted by Instructor Examiners representing one of
PADI’s international offices.
OWSI programs and IDC'S are conducted at Blue Water Aquatics. Programs are
often scheduled to precede the two day IEs scheduled by PADI in the same general
geographic area. However, candidates are free to choose when and where to take
an IE for up to one year from the date of IDC completion. PADI reserves the
right to cancel, reschedule or relocate IEs as staffing, logistics and
enrollment require.
Various instructor-level continuing education courses are offered by Blue
Water Aquatics. Emergency First Response (EFR) Instructor, Specialty Instructor
Training Courses, DSAT Tec Deep Instructor Training (TEC) Courses, and Master
Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT)
Preparatory Courses are designed to teach qualified PADI Instructors how to
organize, promote and conduct these respective courses. IDC Staff Instructor
Courses train qualified Master Scuba Diver Trainers to conduct AI Courses and
IDC's.
Instructor preparatory courses allow candidates to receive remediation and
preview the IDC. Status Updates are a means for PADI Instructors to regain
Teaching status after a period of inactivity if authorized by PADI.
